The Young Woman with the Pearl, housed in the Mauritshuis Museum in The Hague (Holland), is one of the most famous works in the History of Universal Art.
It is a delicate and apparently simple painting that exerts a special attraction for everyone who looks at it. For this reason, many call it the Dutch Mona Lisa.
This is one of the best known and most significant works of Johannes Vermeer, (Delft, Holland 1632-1675). His father owned an inn that offered a plate of hot food and a bed for the night to travelers who came to the city.
The business was on the ground floor of a building that overlooked the market square; Vermeer lived with his family on the upper floors.
It is not known who his teacher was or in what workshop he learned, but at the age of 21 he obtained the title of master of painting. This means that during the previous years he had to take classes and practice many hours in front of a canvas. At that age he also married Catharina, a girl from a wealthy family with whom he had fifteen children, of whom eleven survived.
He made more than forty paintings, of which only thirty-one are preserved, he devoted a lot of time to each work, he made an average of two paintings a year. He specialized in small paintings that reflect domestic interiors with a single character (or at most two or three), almost always a woman.
The figures appear in calm, relaxed and thoughtful poses, while performing simple activities like reading, talking, studying, or playing an instrument. Vermeer does not intend to tell us great feats or historical events, but only to reflect an intimate moment of daily life.
The Girl with a Pearl Earring
Vermeer painted The Girl with a Pearl Earring around the year 1665 and it is his most famous work in the world. It is also a simple and intimate painting but different from the previous ones, because the girl is portrayed very closely, we do not know where she is and she has no objects around her. a turban, it is illuminated against a dark background and looks the viewer in the eye.
The pearl that wears in the left ear stands out. It is shaped like a sphere or hemisphere.
The name of this painting has changed over time. At the time it was painted it was registered under the name A portrait in the Turkish style by the turban on his head. It was surely the title given by the painter himself.
Years later he became known as the Turban Young Man or Young Head. The name The Girl with a Pearl Earring is much more recent, since it began to be used in 1995 when it was baptized that way in an important catalog on Vermeer's work and has remained that way to this day.
Our artist, Natu Dumrauf, As always true to his style of bright colors, shapes and polychromatisms, he has managed to maintain the expression, the look and the relaxed attitude that Vermeer presents us in his work and that we have selected for our clothing and so that you can wear art and be part of our tribe.
